Start Watering Your Own Lawn

You look at your lawn and it is brown with weeds cropping up.  You look at your neighbor to the left and theirs is green and vibrant.  You look at you neighbors to the right and, again, theirs is green and lush.  Looking back to your own yard, nothing has changed....still brown with weeds.  Instead of pulling some weeds and turning on the water, you move in to their home for their grass.  This is your life; this is my life.

The reality in life is this...we could go move into our neighbor’s house and have their nice green lawn. But, it will eventually turn brown. Because there was an original reason why their grass was greener than mine. They watered and cared for it. They pulled the weeds out. They mowed it on a regular basis. There was a time that fertilizer got DUMPED on their lawn. Do you know what fertilizer is? (just checking)  They were patient and waited for the results to show.

If we want to have greener grass in our lives, the answer isn’t to move into our neighbor’s house. Yes, you will get greener grass but you will have to move on every few weeks or months because the grass doesn't stay green on it's own.  The answer is to start taking care of our own lawn. The only way your lawn is going to get greener is if you start focusing on it and stop staring at your neighbors.  You need to water it, pull some weeds, bring in some fertilizer, and mow it regularly.  With regular care, even the most hideous of lawns can become a showpiece of faithful diligence.

Satan will use whatever he can to distract you and make you lose focus.  Our lawn, when we moved in 10 months ago, was in horrible shape.  In fact, we weren't even sure if the grass would grow.  BUT we also weren't going to spend the entire winter season worrying about it either.  Our grass was dormant, so we could have spent the entire season fretting about it, worrying about it, wishing we had the neighbors yard, or be grateful for the yard we had and put some effort into making it grow.  This yard needs lots of work, even still, but we know it has potential.  We are going to need to invest more money, more time........   We also DO have the option to give up, but we will never know the satisfaction of working to make something beautiful and seeing the potential come to the surface.

And causing your lawn to become healthy is NOT a clean job.  Be prepared to get dirty....VERY DIRTY!

With sweat on our brows and dirt beneath our nails,

Josh and Serena

P.S.  If this is a bit confusing, read "marriage" in place of "lawn."  It should help.

Spoken like a true landscaper & wife of a landscaper. I love this analogy. Your post also reminded me that you (I) am never too old to have a beautiful lawn. I just have to be willing to do the work and watch God's process take over. Thanks again!
