Are You Really Ready?

What does your heart look like?

When your spouse feels that tug in their spirit and they cannot run any longer, is your heart and your home ready for them to return?  Believing that there is a set formula that God uses in order to move on your spouse's heart would be foolish and set you up for disappointment, but I do believe God is looking at our hearts.  Are they soft?  (Have we talked about this before?)  If your spouse comes home is their life going to be a living hell because you can't control your emotions?

I (Serena) remember a moment where my emotions really felt out of control; it didn't help that I was also 7 months pregnant. When Josh first left it would NOT have been a pleasant home-coming; I am sure his life would have been miserable because I was not ready to fight for my marriage the way it needed to be done.  My spirit had resolve, but it was NOT at peace.  If you have decided to stand for your marriage, then you must come to a place where you have told God you will do whatever it takes.  You will endure the pain and you will endure it knowing that the temporary (yet seemingly unending) pain is for the greater good.  The suffering you endure is not just for your marriage it's for the marriages of generations to come.  Your heart must find the "peace that passes all understanding. (Philippians 4:7)"

When you think of where you stand right now, do you find yourself constantly discouraged?   If your spouse comes home today and you haven't discovered peace while you have been waiting.....they might just walk out again.  You have decided you will stand but if they come home are they going to be glad they did?  Have you allowed God to work in your heart, body, mind, soul, and spirit?  Have you been changed to the point that there is no turning back? This experience should be changing the very core of who you are; you should end up becoming more like Christ.  The light of Christ should be shining through the despair and, if it is, people will see it.  BUT it has to be real; this can't be about "winning" your mate.  They are not a prize to be won.  If they are, then the minute there is a back-sliding, a stumble, or a tough day you will give up.  Believe us, those days do happen!  The marriage will still be work even with many battles having been won.

We encourage you, as always, to examine your heart. Is bitterness creeping in?  Is despair, fear, and doubt trying to keep you from standing?  All of these things need to be dealt with so that when your spouse returns home they know you mean business...that you said what you meant--'til death do us part.  This means that you are going to continue standing even if it feels like it's killing you....you're still breathing, right?  As long as we have breath...WE STAND AND FIGHT!!

Wanna Fight?

We need to address a subject that many of you may not have much knowledge about.  That is spiritual warfare.  It is a subject that is pivotal to marital restoration success and one that needs to be taught more.  It is not one that should be taken lightly; it's very serious business.  There is no way that we can cover everything in one post.  This will be a few days to get the basics covered and we will probably come back to this more over time.  Like most of our topics we do not claim to be experts.  However, both of us grew up in churches where we were taught the reality and gravity of spiritual warfare.

When the terms spiritual warfare are used, (for the person unaccustomed to it) it will conjure up images of movies like The Exorcist,  and Paranormal Activity.  While they are based in some truth, Hollywood cannot accurately portray what is really happening in realm of the supernatural.  So, as we begin this conversation we will attempt to show what spiritual warfare is and how it should be applied to our marriages.

As we start to wage spiritual warfare for our marriages, we need to start at the beginning.  The beginning of spiritual warfare is not knowing what the demons and angels are up to.  In order for us to venture into the realm of spiritual warfare, we need to be dressed properly.  When you are getting ready to go into work, you dress for the task at hand.  If you are moving your home, you would not dress in a suit and tie or evening dress.  Why?  Because it is likely that you will get sweaty and dirty.  If you are going to work in your garden, you are not going to wear what you would if you were about to meet a distinguished member of your country's government.  You would dress accordingly.  If we are going out to battle the enemy of our souls for the health, vitality, and restoration of our marriage we should dress accordingly.

Ephesians 6:10-17
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[c] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

This is our dress when we go out to fight.  And since we don't fight for our marriages a couple days out of the week or for a few hours a day, we need to be dressed for battle ALL THE TIME.  That way we can STAND at all times.

The armor goes on just as if you were dressing for war.   There is a reason why we the armor is described in this fashion.  Let's look at each of the pieces and why they are important...

Belt of Truth (waist girded with truth)
The reason that we put this on first is so that we are covered, first and foremost, with truth.  Not subjective truth but Absolute Truth.  The truth that comes from Jesus Christ.  When we know the truth, we cannot and will not be persuaded by lies.  The lies from the enemy fall on deaf ears once truth has spoken.  In Roman times (when this was written) this belt would be the same as a war skirts that soldiers would wear.  It covered the loins which, in both men and women, hold the reproductive organs.  We need to cover our ability to reproduce with truth.

Breastplate of Righteousness
We cover our vital organs with righteousness.  Not our own righteousness but the righteousness that comes from being in right standing with God.  Isaiah 64:6 says that our own righteousness is like filthy rags (aka women's menstrual pads...just being real, folks).  We need the righteousness of God to come and cover our heart.  The Bible says that out of the heart flow the issues of life and that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.  By keeping our heart covered with the righteousness of God, it keeps it right before Him and as a result keeps our heart tender.

Gospel of Peace Shoes
As we struggle to keep ourselves in a right mind, we will eventually fail.  Our minds will go to dark places.  However, when we make our foundation (our feet) one of peace, even the most hideous of storms will not cause is to lose our peace.  We need to strap them on tight.  Philippians 4:7 is part of a prayer we should pray...that the peace of God that passes understanding would guard our hearts and minds.  The road to marital restoration is tumultuous at its best.  Put on the shoes that will allow you to have peace in your stance.

Shield of Faith
Above all, make sure grab this everyday.  With it you will not only stop but quench or extinguish the fiery darts from the enemy.  The shield of faith is what will enable you to see your marriage through the lies of what it looks like right now.  Your faith will allow you to see God coming through when it looks like all is lost.  This shield is one that you can completely hide behind when the battle becomes to ferocious and still be safe.  This shield has the ability to join together with other fellow warriors and standers to make an impenetrable wall.  Your faith in Jesus will become your greatest defense.  Your faith in Him will stand for you when it seems like you are unable to make it.

Helmet of Salvation

Where does our salvation come from?  It does not come from Dr. Phil or Oprah.  It does not come from any other.  Our salvation comes from the One who took death, hell, and the grave on the chin and came back victorious from them.  In Exodus 14:16, when Israel was facing the Red Sea on one side and the armies of Egypt on the other, Moses told Israel to STAND still and see the salvation of the Lord.  This helmet covers our eyes so that we see like He sees.  He sees in the realm of faith and impossibilities.  This helmet covers our ears.  The enemy is screaming his lies and we are able to only hear the gentle but firm

voice of our King.  It covers our mind so that the mind that was in Christ Jesus would be in us (Philippians 2:5).  It covers our mouth so that we only speak what we hear the King saying.  And if, God forbid that your shield isn't up, your helmet will not allow Satan to take you out with one shot.

Sword of the Spirit
Our only offensive weapon but one that can cut through anything.  Hebrews 4:12 says that it is living and powerful and is able to pierce to the division of soul and spirit.  The Word of God needs to not only be hidden in your heart (Psalms 119:11) but also in your mouth (Joshua 1:8).  We need to become proficient with the Word of God.  Memorize it.  Meditate on it.  This does not mean to sit in a difficult yoga pose and clear your mind.  It actually means to FILL your entire being with His Words.  Even Jesus, when battling Satan while He was fasting in the wilderness, didn't fight with any other weapon.  He spoke the words that the Father had long ago authored.  If it worked for Jesus, it should work for us.

The only area that is not covered is our back.  The reason for that is that the King never intended for us to turn our back to the fight.  We are expected to advance.  And if we cannot advance, we are told to stand.  Don't give up ground that has already been taken.

Now that we are dressed, we are ready to fight.  But, don't stop with outfitting yourself with for the fight.  Dress your spouse for battle.  They may not be able to do it for themselves but you can for them.  I did it for Josh while he was gone.  It is likely the only thing that kept his life from being snatched before his time.  Dress your kids.  The enemy doesn't just want your marriage; he wants the destiny of your kids, too.  If he can take out their future by destroying your marriage now, he will.  Don't let him!

Get your armor on...EVERYDAY!!!  We have only begun to fight!!

Weathering the Storm

Yesterday, while I was working, I experienced one of the summer thunderstorms that Northern Colorado is known for.  Usually they come in quickly, dump a lot of water, and then disappear almost as quickly.  However, they never come in at an opportune time and rarely are you prepared for them, even if you payed attention to the weatherman.  They often hit when you are busy doing something that you would prefer to be dry for.  Needless to say, I got drenched from head to foot.   However, I still managed to get my work done.

Sound a bit like married life?  Comes in quick, makes a mess, happens at the worst times, can leave just as fast but leaves you all wet...yea, that's how storms come and go.  But, the storms in married life don't have to leave you defeated or depressed.  You may not necessarily feel mighty and victorious but you will know that you got through another storm.

Jesus' disciples found themselves caught in some storms during their time with Jesus.  They freaked out just like we do but still made it through the storm.  I doubt that they felt powerful after the storm; they probably felt pretty foolish seeing as they were WITH Jesus (in the flesh) and they still were worried about their tiny little lives.

I don't believe that the storms that we endure are always from God but I do believe that He uses them to draw us closer to Him.  When the disciples feared for their life they ran to Jesus.  When the storm gets ugly enough we do the same...or at least we should!  And when the storm is over, we learn that we have not died and that we CAN make it through.

I have had to work (at my actual job) enough times through ugly weather to know how much I can take before I call it quits.  Today actually pushed me a little farther than I would usually endure.  My client asked me if I wanted to step into the garage while the storm raged.  I declined.  Not because I love the working in mud and rain and hail but because I was almost done and knew I could finish it if I set my mind to do it.  I got the work done in a relatively short time, in spite of the rain.  And besides, I was already wet!  Why wait in the garage and be wet when I could be wet and have the work done?

Translate that to our marriages...I am sure you have dealt with some ugly situations in your marriage in the past.  Maybe a fight that got out of hand or some hard choices that you eventually had to deal with.  Either way, you made it through.  You didn't die.  Maybe a little rough around the edges now but you're on the other side of it now.  So, the storm you are facing now is pushing you farther than you would like.  You have two choices...1. Get wet in the storm and have to deal with it and have nothing to glorify God with or 2. Get wet, deal with it and let your stand bring glory to God.  Either way, you are going to get wet!  You might as well be wet and have stood your ground for your spouse and your marriage.  You cannot escape the storm...you're already in it...might as well finish the work, endure the storm, and make God look good.

The more storms you face, the more you will learn how to deal with them.  It doesn't mean you will EVER like the storm but you will KNOW that you are bigger than the storm because the God inside of you is bigger!!

1 John 4:4b
...because the Spirit who lives in you
is greater
than the spirit who lives in the world.

Get Revenge

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Who are you fighting?  Have you forgotten?  Are you finding that you are taking revenge out on your spouse?  Maybe you are even finding some progress in the things you have been applying, but you are still unsatisfied.  That's okay....take it out on the RIGHT thing!!

Get your joy, your peace, your self-esteem, your time, your place and voice in God....get it ALL back, and FIGHT for it!!!

I (Serena) had to have listened to this song EVERY day for 4 months...oh, and I had it on REPEAT!!!  It still just makes me wanna SHOUT!!!  I WANT IT ALL BACK!!! And my favorite...."you wouln't have bothered me if you had known what I was gonna be....."    Let that be your cry when you get tired!!!!  Get mad at the devil; make him wish he had NEVER thought to bother you!!!

Right For the Job

The past few days at work I have had to endure a job that I very much disliked.  And yesterday was the culmination of all of the preparation I had done.  I was responsible for cutting into a large water main and installing a valve for a new client's landscape irrigation system.  The past two days involved locating the main from the plans, digging it up (it was 4 ft. deep), purchasing all of the parts, and cutting into it.  I had contacted the company that manages the property to inform them of my plans and to obtain the information about the valves that would shut off the water so that I could work in it.  Well, I shut the valves, cut the line, and then waited for it to drain.  It drained for over 24 hours and was not about to stop.  So, the managing company sent a guy out o help me shut off the entire system.  After he did I was able to finish my job, which was the part I was dreading.  That was, to jump into this huge, muddy hole and begin to clear the mud so that I could plumb my valve in.  Let's just say that I was not a happy camper!

I didn't have a bad attitude; I just didn't want to do it.  It was dirty, wet, and tough to do.  But, that is what my employer pays me for.  He calls for me when the job needs to be done in a certain manner and trusts my work.  That is the reputation that I have established with him.  It makes for many of my jobs and projects to be less than enjoyable.  However, he has entrusted me with some of his most delicate work issues knowing that I will come through for him.  When the job needs to get done, I am the man for the job.

You may be wondering, "How is this work story connected to marriage and standing for them?"  Let me explain...

Most of us started our married lives in relative peace in our relationship.  We expected life to be roses and perfume all of the time.  We were going to be like marshmallows and hot chocolate, peanut butter and jelly, or peas and carrots all of our days.  No bad would befall us because we LOVED each other.  It's why we got married, right?

But, that's not how life turned out, is it?  The roses turned out to have more thorns than you imagined.  You got hurt by your spouse.  You hurt your spouse.  I hurt my wife.  I nearly derailed my marriage.  Life got ROUGH!

Now, if you believe that nothing is chance...that everything has a purpose...that God has been orchestrating and choreographing your entire life....each and every moment He has known about and taken into consideration, then you have to realize that even this crisis that you are walking through is by His design.  This is not to say that God made your spouse do what they did to you.  However, it does say that YOU, by His design, were the right person for this situation.

It means that He knew your unique make-up of traits, attributes, talents, and character would be exactly what He needed to make the difference in your spouse's life.  He knows your weaknesses and faults but is able to work through them and show Himself strong through them.  As ugly as the situation is or may get, you are not in it by accident.  There is something that God is desiring to do in you and through you by His grace.  You are the man/ woman for the job of YOUR marriage restoration.

Yea, I know....you don't want to do it.  I didn't want to have to do the plumbing work in that main line, either.  It's not fun.  There is little to no recognition for all the mess you have to put up with.  You feel mistreated and used.  You are overlooked and under appreciated.  But, regardless, you are the right person for the job.  When God saw the situation that was about go down, He saw you and said, "There you are; I have been looking for you.  I need for you to be who you are and endure this situation.  No one else can do it.  You are perfectly suited for this."

Now, at first glance, this may not appeal to you or seem to be encouraging.  But, I tell you it is.  Going back to me and my work, I get very frustrated sometimes when I think about the task at hand that my boss is asking me to do.  It is tough and, usually, exhausting.  But, when I step back and see that he gives me these job because he trusts me and knows I can handle them with integrity and faithfulness,  I feel much better.  God is not giving you the trial you are walking through because He dislikes you or has forgotten about you.  Just the opposite is true.  He HAS considered you.  He HAS thought about you.  He has bestowed trust upon you knowing that you will not let Him down by giving up.

Here is what the Word of God says about you...

Romans 8:28 We know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Psalms 139:16 You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

God needs you!  Your spouse needs you (even if they say they don't, they still do!)!  Be the right person for the job!

Farewell to Lukewarm

How often does your church give an altar call for salvation? Do they preach with a goal to save souls from destruction? If your spouse walked into a church service, after abandoning you...what would they hear?  Do you KNOW what your church believes?  Would you be directed to an altar or an attorney. Even though only separated, many are pointed toward divorce recovery classes, often the first step in finding a new mate. Or they encourage a spouse to get involved with the single's ministry, so that they have something to do!  We shake our heads in sadness, because we see that as a lukewarm stand. Believing God will restore your marriage can not be about recovering from divorce; singles' ministry is not waiting for your spouse to come home.  And, yes, I realize that many churches have both of these programs, and they encourage people to attend.

The motto of many churches in dealing with fractured marriage has shifted from "Hang on and let God work," to "Get mad, get over it, and get on with your life."  We rejoice when we hear about a pastor who has taken on a prodigal church member who walked away from family and faith, praying and praying, and praying some more; loving the unlovable, until that marriage is healed. We are thrilled when we hear of a pastor going the extra mile to show a confused, sin-filled prodigal they are still loved, both by that pastor and by their God.

How often from the pulpit at your church do you hear, "marriage restoration," or "marriage put back together again," or "marriage restored," or marriage healed," or anything along that line?" Just consider what would happen if every pastor in the world was praying for marriage restoration every week! That is where we need to be. If we are praying for the sick, why not the sick marriages?  We get so excited when it happens at our church.  Maybe this is NEW for your church....maybe God has you in a place to shed new light.  BUT you have got to make a decision for yourself  and your family that you are no longer accepting lukewarm.  The Bible even talks about it being better if you are cold!!!  If you do not want to believe in God's restoration power for your marriage, that's fine. BUT stop saying you do and then going to the single's group!

There may come a day when your prodigal spouse goes to church or sits down with a pastor. We pray they will be given a straightforward answer; not looking for loopholes, but a man of God sharing what the Bible says about marriage, divorce, and the family. Your prodigal needs to be directed home, not into another relationship. We need to pray there are pastors like that across the land.

A couple years ago, as Josh and I were in the beginning stages of the healing process, I (Serena) went to see a counselor at our church.  I went there looking for advice as to what I could do to help the healing and health of our marriage.  What I got was not what I expected.  I was told that I was dumb and ignorant for allowing Josh back into my home.  As a stander I (Serena) actually had to write a letter to one of our pastors explaining my stand for marriage and that I was NOT thrilled that I was given advice to seek a divorce.   I realize a lot of pain can be caused by allowing a spouse that is not fully committed, but it is NOT dumb or ignorant to believe that GOD is capable of changing hearts.  Pray that MORE people will stand and fight against the enemy and his attack on marriages.  It is not too late to stop the slide to destruction of individuals, families, churches, and then society. Do you stand for marriage? Or does it just sound good?

"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy because I am holy." I Peter 1:15

Ultimately it is each person's choice to be hot or cold...BUT we pray that you will make a choice.  It may be much more difficult to keep water boiling and hot, but it's worth it in the end.  Or even ice water...gotta keep putting in something to stay cold.  To be lukewarm takes NO effort...no drive...no heart...no passion! Have passion for something!

Remaining Married

Yesterday we were talking about boundaries.  As we look a little bit more about boundaries, we would like to do it with idea of remaining married.  Not only does this apply to those of us that are married and currently with our spouses in a good place but especially for those that are currently not with your spouse and need to remain married.

Boundaries are important for each of us but even more so for those of us that are standing for our marriage.  Meaning that if you are currently not physically with your spouse you need to keep that guard up!  If you let it down, you may begin by standing for your marriage but will wind up falling for someone else.  You will reason that this MUST be who God has for you since they are so great.  In reality, you will have jumped your own fences.  If you are believing and standing for your complete marital restoration, DO NOT let someone in that will compromise and jeopardize God's work in you and your marriage.

A problem that we see becoming more and more the norm for some people is the idea of NOT wearing wedding rings.  We have heard all of the excuses.  "I don't want to ruin the ring."  "It doesn't fit well."  "I could lose my finger doing the work I do if I had it on."  "It gets in the way."  Yea, it sounds good and your point why might be totally valid.  However, you start the habit of not wearing a ring and then it is not a big deal when you should be!  As I (Josh) progressed down my debauched road, I began to not wear my ring the moment I walked out the door.  It was my way of distancing myself from my marriage in order to allow me more freedom to live corruptly.  Now, it does NOT leave my finger...EVER!!  It does not matter what I am doing I will ALWAYS be associated with my spouse.  That ring you are supposed to be wearing symbolizes an unending, undying love for your spouse.  Usually made of a precious metal, it is designed to withstand the abuse and torture that live throws at it...much like your commitment to each other should be.

Having said all of that, you who are standing for your spouse should be wearing your ring.  Even if they are not, you should be.  If nothing else it will remind you that you are still married and should conduct yourself as such  Your spouse needs to know that you are still married, that you have not given up, that you are prepared and ready for their eventual return.

That ring (for standers going through it with a prodigal and those that are happily married and all of you somewhere in between) is a boundary that travels with you.  When you wear your ring it tells all those that come in contact with that you and your heart belong to someone else.  You don't have to speak any words and you can boldly declare that "I am off limits."

And, by the way, belonging to someone is not a bad thing.  It is a comforting and reassuring place to live in knowing that you do not belong to yourself.  When you are remaining married, you know that you are not your own; you belong to your spouse.  Therefore, all of your affections, all of your time, all of your energies belong to that spouse.  You may find it hard to let go at first but it becomes easier when you realize and understand that God is watching out over both of you.

Speaking of being prepared and ready for their return brings up a good point.  You need to maintain a readiness in your home and in your life for their return.  You say that you are standing for your prodigal spouse to return but have removed all evidence of their existence from your home and life.  The ring is gone, the pictures are down, and their clothes relegated to a box in the back bedroom.  What if they walked in, right this moment, and said that they wanted to work on restoration?  Would your home and life welcome them back?  Would you have to make room for them?

When I (Josh) was gone, Serena had begun to remove my things from the home and walls.  She took the pictures off the walls and put away my things.  But, when she began to stand, she learned that if I was to come home I would feel out of place.  Where were all of my things?  I can only imagine the heartache seeing the pictures and reliving those memories did to her but she knew momentary pain would be worth the cost if when I came home I was welcomed back with open arms.

So, fix the excuse why you don't wear your ring (get it sized, deal with the hassle of putting it on after dishes or after the dangerous work is done, etc.) and put it back on!  Pull out the pictures from the closet and rehang them.  Get their things and put their stuff back in its rightful place.  Prepare your house and life and be ready for God's hand to move.  It may just happen when you least expect it.

Supporting Role

When we recount bits and pieces of our story it's very difficult to put in each part of how it unfolded...who was involved, who helped, who didn't.  BUT we can agree on one thing....EVERYONE played an important part.

When I (Josh) walked away from my family, I also walked away from over 10 years of ministry.  Playing the keyboard, leading worship, and preaching were only a few of my duties as Assistant Pastor of my father's church.  Walking away hurt many people, not just Serena and the children.

I (Serena) spent many evenings at Josh's parents home trying to NOT think about how my life was NOT what it was supposed to be at the moment.  We watched movies, laughed, cried, and played.  I wanted the boys to still have time to wrestle and play in Nana and Papa's backyard.  It also allowed me more time to cry and not let the children see me.  Josh's dad would drive with me into town, so that I wasn't alone. On the drive back to my house I had to call back and say I got home safely.  Josh's sisters were always willing to take a child or two to play, so that I had more time.  We didn't walk the road alone, that is for sure.  Even Josh's Grandma and Aunt would slip us some money to go out to eat after church on Sunday, something we had always done prior to Josh's leaving.  As best everyone could, we tried to make life a happier time.

And although, in the beginning, Josh's family felt that separation/divorce was the answer they most definitely did NOT stay that way. As more time passed, the fire for "standing" grew stronger.  For some, it was realizing what they believed about marriage was being refined and tested.  Did God allow for divorce?  Was it okay? Was there a different path?  Had anyone done this before?  For others, it was just a matter of supporting what I believed.  Since that time we have even received apologies for even suggesting that divorce was the answer. Thank you, to all of you....even when there was doubt it still HELPED to have you!!

When I would read something about standing or prodigals or something else that God revealed to me, I was on the phone to someone.  Josh's dad, mom, sister, my mom, my friend.....anyone who was available.  Most evenings I spent chatting or talking with my mom after the children went to bed.  I was definitely blessed to have a great support system.

Josh's sister interceded for him in ways that are still "out of the ordinary" when we talk about them.  Both Josh's parents spent many nights in tears and prayer. My mom fasted most nights from 8 pm to midnight. (Josh's WORST time.)  E-mails to friends all over the world were written to start prayer chains and fasting...once a plan was decided, it was supported. Looking back I am so glad that I was not alone.  I (Serena) had to keep it together and never forget what I was standing for, but I did NOT lack a crying shoulder.  AND I knew that when I asked for prayer....that was EXACTLY what they were all doing.

Again, THANK YOU....to all of those who helped make the journey of "standing" just a bit more comfortable for all of us.

Separation and Divorce

A question was recently asked of us, "Don't you think that there are some reasons for separation and divorce?"  We have sat on this for about a week before we answered.  We never want to respond to a question based upon our own preconceived ideas.

Our position is a complicated one.  We hope that we can properly convey it in this post.  Mind you, this is OUR position based upon what we have seen, experienced, and learned through the Word of God.

To begin, we would have to address the concept of divorce.  What we believe about divorce is based upon what we believe about God.  We have said it before...God is bigger!  Bigger than any sin, fault, or short-coming we may have, you may have, or that your spouse may have.  He is able to do AWESOME things with a person and for a person that is fully submitted to Him and His will...no matter where it may take them.  And because we believe that, we believe that no marital situation is beyond His ability to reconcile and restore.  Therefore, we believe that there is NO reason for divorce.  For us, divorce is a very black-and-white issue.  God is bigger, therefore, divorce is not a grey area

We do understand that the Bible does allow for divorce.  However, the only reason for divorce, that the Bible gives, is for infidelity.  It does not allow for "We grew apart" or "Irreconcilable differences".  This may sound harsh but it does not even allow for divorce in the case of abuse!  And the divorce that is legal, in the eyes of God, was only given because of the hardness of OUR heart, not because God was not big enough to do His work of restoration!  The final stipulation that God put on those that did end up with divorce was that they should not marry again!  That is the subject of a different post altogether.

Knowing how we believe about divorce, let us address the issue of separation.  This is where things can get tricky.  Changing your status from married to separated is beginning to walk on some very dangerous ground.  On one hand, we could argue that sometimes it is necessary; on the other, you are beginning to practice living as divorced people.  Who gets the responsibility of raising the kids?  What bills are paid by whom?  Who leaves and has to find a new residence and who stays in the home that you built together?  So many questions, so many unique situations.

If your reason for becoming separated is to give each other some space, it is the wrong reason.  It's practicing divorce.  However, if it is a time where one spouse is living a life that compromises the safety of the family unit, we could see some benefits to a moderated and accountable arrangement.  Whether it is abuse or promiscuity, there could be an argument made for separation.  In our opinion, if you are proceeding with a separation arrangement with the intent of coming together again at a later date, you need to be held to the standards of married life by a someone willing to call you on the carpet for your actions.  You need to find someone that will watch you closely and help you to insure that you are not preparing for divorce but rather standing for your marriage.

Another aspect that was asked of us was how kids are affected by this whole process.  What should you do when kids are involved?  We definitely do not think that you should endanger you children if a spouse is abusive; neither do we think that you should divorce your spouse because they are that way.  Ask God to reveal a solution to the issue at hand (your kids protection and your marital restoration) so that He would be glorified.  He is so creative in the way He works; you cannot find nor create a situation that He cannot handle.

There is no set rulebook for marital restoration.  There is no program that can guarantee success.  It is too difficult to explain every imaginable scenario where a separation would be the way to go.  For inevitably, the enemy of our souls will find a way to make that situation come to pass.  As a rule, we would not advise you to pursue separation because it becomes ground that is unstable.  Rather we would counsel you to seek the face of God to find out what He would have you to do.  He is far more wise than we are and His ways are WAY higher than ours.  God's way--COMPLETELY--is the only way that we know, that will insure your marriage to glorify Him.

Hopefully, we answered some of your questions in regards to separation and divorce.  We know we can be extreme in our views but Christianity is not a religion of mediocrity or passivity.  It is one that is all or nothing and is filled with extreme displays of affection for His beloved.  Being believers, that kind of commitment must be evident in our beliefs about marriage.

I love my wife!  I love my husband!

Should This Make Us Rejoice?

"Divorce Rate Declining"

Let’s look at the details behind the headlines of some articles I came across. The marriage rate has dropped by nearly 30% in the past 25 years, and people are waiting about five years longer to marry than they did in 1970. The study also showed that divorce within the first ten years of marriage dropped by one-third among college educated women, while remaining stable among less educated women. Divorce rates are lowered because of economic strain...well, that makes no sense?  According the article, the money causes stress, but the reason for the decline may have more to do with the fact that they can't afford to be divorced.  This breaks my heart.

One major reason for the divorce rate being down, according to the study, is due to more couples living together without marrying. The number of couples who live together without marriage has increased tenfold in the past 25 years. It's clearly NOT that divorce has declined...it's that our culture has changed.  God still calls it sin for each individual involved in such a relationship. Every form of media actually encourages this trial-run.

In 1970, most unmarried couples who lived together did so privately. Today such sinful living arrangements are proudly announced. This is true, even when a covenant spouse has been abandoned so that a prodigal spouse can enter the sinful relationship.  I knew it was just a matter of time during Josh's prodigal days that his relationship would escalate to this level....

Cohabitation is here to stay," says David Popenoe, a Rutgers sociology professor and report co-author. "I don't think it's good news, especially for children," he says. "As society shifts from marriage to cohabitation — which is what's happening — you have an increase in family instability."

Cohabiting couples have twice the breakup rate of married couples, the report's authors say. And in the USA, 40% bring kids into these often-shaky live-in relationships.

"It is important now to think beyond the divorce rate to other kinds of couple unions and look at how stable they are," says Barbara Dafoe Whitehead, a social historian and report co-author.

"It's a pretty short period of time for that change (cohabitation) to have occurred and to have taken hold in the way it has," she says.

In the USA, 8.1% of coupled households are made up of unmarried, heterosexual partners. Although many European countries have higher cohabitation rates, divorce rates in those countries are lower, and more children grow up with both biological parents, even though the parents may not be married, Popenoe says.

The USA has the lowest percentage among Western nations of children who grow up with both biological
parents, 63%, the report says.

"The United States has the weakest families in the Western world because we have the highest divorce rate and the highest rate of solo parenting," Popenoe says. (stats found in USA today, 2005)

When a prodigal mother or father is packing their bags, walking out on a family to pursue selfish interests, it is unfortunate that the individual cannot look 20 years ahead, and see their child, grown up, but scarred by what that prodigal is about to cause to happen. Once the enemy has blinded a spouse, they consider only the immediate, and not the long term. Divorce is legalized child abuse, for what it does to children. (Ouch!)  During Josh's absence this was the kind of thing that kept me standing.......

Moms and Dads say they want what is best for their kids. That has to be an intact home; I said BEST.... this does NOT mean that God doesn't protect our children.  BUT I am sick and tired of hearing about little boys and girls who cry themselves to sleep every night, and hearing about a brokenhearted child when a prodigal parent does not show up for visitation.  or for graduation, or for weddings, or for other monumental occasions, as promised. Children sometimes suffer silently; I can think of many things over the last 20 years that I have been saddened by--in regards to my parent's divorce.  This is NOT what God intended; it is NOT His best.  AND, yes, you can survive...this is about God's best.

Of all the sad things I have seen and witness when a marriage breaks up, the most heartbreaking is a young lady who has become sexually active, going from man to man, in a futile attempt to recapture the love that her daddy did not give her. As an adult having come from a divorced home I am so grateful this is NOT my story, but I have seen it so many times.  No man on this earth will ever replace what a father has robbed from her. I pray that these girls can discover early that the love of God can replace the love of a selfish, absent, earthly father. I spent many nights crying out for Jael, praying she never had to go through the feelings of rejection. No matter how much a child can rationalize in their mind it's not about them....it still feels like it, at times.

If you are even slightly considering telling me today that, "I quit. This is too hard. Nothing is changing. Everyone says I deserve better" messages--do NOT think of doing that today.

Are you so concerned with your immediate happiness that you cannot do what God has called you to do?
What circumstances would change today if you stopped standing?
There is too much at stake for you to become selfish, as your prodigal spouse has already done. Standing for the restoration of your marriage does not cause harm to your child...it allows them to see that you serve a God that is "God of the impossible!"

Society now accepts cohabitation as normal. The judicial system has no problem with it.  But wait, in many instances, the church has accepted cohabitation. I know...you are thinking I have crossed the line, but it's true in a lot of churches. I am not saying this is YOUR church. Somehow, it has become acceptable for two people, not married to one another, to live together in adultery, and to not only attend church, but to be actively involved in church functions--until God convicts them, right?

So, the divorce rate may have dropped a bit......for many reasons......
BUT is there any hope? Yes, there certainly is. Although it won't be found--most likely in statistics. How do you gather statistics based on GOD in His reconciliation power? Statistics need to be based in that divorce is down 100% in YOUR marriage. This will happen when the Holy Spirit has touched the hearts of you and your spouse, and you both have responded and have started to live as God intended, as a husband and wife, forsaking all others, "Til death us do part."

This disease has a cure; the war can be won.  BUT only with God’s help. First, you need to do what God has shown you to do--remember this is NOT about Josh and Serena.  Instead of running into another relationship, with an even higher possibility of failure, you need to take a secure stand with God for marriage restoration.  Second, do not become a secret stander. Allow others, in your family, at work, in your church, and in your circle of influence to hear, by your words and by your actions that you mean business in this war against divorce. When I told my mom that I would stand for Josh and our marriage she said, "How bad does it have to get? When do I tell you it's okay to give up?"  I replied, "It will get bad; it'll get worse. No matter how bad it gets....I can NEVER give up.  Always remind me I said NEVER, EVER, EVER give up!"   I never did say I wanted give up...I have no doubt that letting people know that I would stick to what God told me to do and never change was critical to my never giving up.  People WILL watch to see if you are only a secret stander.

My Place is Here

Here is something that I felt very impressed to share with you today.

I had a very interesting conversation with my mom today.  It wasn't the subject so much that grabbed my attention; it was what my mom told me about my grandmother that struck me.

Some back story first...my mom's parents are both in their 80's.  They have been married what would seem like forever to most of us.  They met through my grandmother's brother who was serving in the army with my grandfather.  They began writing to each other having never met face to face.  Long story short...they eventually got married and had 4 children.  My grandparents were never ones to be consumed with the need to have lots of "things"; they knew how to get by with what they had.  My grandpa worked as a janitor at a local school for many years.  They were always faithful in their tithes and giving from their meager resources.

During their marriage and life, my grandpa was diagnosed with some rather severe mental problems. In fact, the doctors brought my grandma divorce papers to sign while he was still in the hospital. They just assumed she would be filing. She refused.  It was never talked about much, but as a kid I remember hearing stories of issues that they had dealt with in the past.

After my grandpa retired from the school (about 20 years ago), he began to slowly degrade mentally and physically.  The chores and things that he did out of ritual slowly began to get pushed aside.  He had always been strong and able-bodied but began to become weak.  Every time that he became sick from a cold or something minor, it felt as though that "this might be the time."  A 6ft plus man in his prime has been reduced to a walker that barely gets him around.  A wheelchair is often easier to move him around.  Recently, he has taken a turn for the much worse.  He has become to much for my grandma to care for.  He was admitted to the VA Hospital near his home and has been accepted into a short-term care facility that specializes in patients with dementia.  It is sad to see him slowly become so helpless.

But, what struck me today was this...as time has progressed my grandpa has become more and more difficult to care for at his home.  When he sleeps he is very agitated, has night terrors, falls out of bed...basically, does not have very good nights.  Which also means that his wife, grandma, has very bad nights.  My mom said that she was becoming very haggard looking due to so little sleep.  (As a bit of more information, my parents and grandparents live together.  My grandparents moved in with my family a few years after grandpa retired.)  My mom suggested that grandma come and sleep in another room in the house so that she could get some sleep.

My grandma's response will stick with me forever, I think!

She said, "No...my place is here."

Her place was with her husband that, because of his failing mental capacities, is causing her to have poor nights.  Her place was to stay with this man, that she pledged her love to many years ago, not knowing that this would be the end.  Her place was to endure whatever this stage of her life brought to her.  Her place is with her husband in their bed...together to the end.  Her place was a place of sacrifice for the one she loved.  Her place was there even when it is not what she signed up for.

How cheap does your love feel right about now?  I feel ashamed that I would even question or doubt if I could endure what I have seen my grandma endure.  Yes, I would stick with Serena to even the most horrible of imaginable endings to our life.  But, there is that twinge of doubt..."Could I really do that?"  My grandma would probably say that it is not a big deal.

But, it is a big deal.  IT'S A HUGE DEAL!!  We view our marriages as some sort of disposable commodity that we can discard as soon as the relationship becomes a little too  unsatisfactory for our taste.  Because we feel as though we are no longer being fulfilled by the parameters of our marriage, we reason that it is OK to look somewhere else for that fulfillment.  We have cheapened the institution of marriage by becoming so fickle in our affections.  No longer is it "until death do us part" it is more close to "until no longer we feel like it."

This blog is not about somehow finding the magic key to making marriage everything that it is supposed to be; it's about us (Serena, myself, and all of you) wrestling with the Scriptures, listening to the Holy Spirit, and then putting our hands to the plow and not looking back and putting into practice what we have learned.  It might take some blood...probably a lot of sweat....and a huge amount of tears but through our obedience and commitment we can make our marriages into what they were designed to do, that is...to glorify God!

So, keep standing...

Josh

Thanks, Grandma, for standing.

Reality Check

So, Serena and I were a little overwhelmed by the response to yesterday's post. We are so completely humbled right now. We spent quite a bit of time last night talking about the things that happened, comments that were shared, emails we received, and links on Facebook.

Serena was asked for the recipe for those pancakes. We will be sharing the recipe for those "pancakes" in another day or so. But, we decided that in today's post we needed to share some VERY difficult truths about people, about us, and about what it will take for you to stand for your marriage. You may not like what we have to say but it is said with absolute love for you. We do not want you to be discouraged by what the situation currently looks like or will look like tomorrow.

So, grab a seat, maybe a cup of coffee or tea, and I am pretty sure a box of tissues...

To start, we believe that NO marriage is too far gone! But this belief does not come from our own puny wisdom that we have learned through trial and error. We believe that every marriage is capable of restoration because we believe in and have faith in a God that is bigger! He is bigger than any circumstance or situation thrown at Him by man. He is bigger than any stubborn habits that we possess. He is bigger than the hardness of our hearts. If you cannot grasp, through faith, the enormity of the God that we serve....what hope do you have? If you think that the solution to your marital problems can be found in you, good luck. If you believe that God is bigger than the problem and that He is the solution...well, you have just completely changed the rules of engagement. I mean, you will have just enlisted the help of the God of impossibilities!

With all that being said, you have to understand that if you embark on a journey to save your marriage you must count the cost. Luke 14:28-30 speaks of a man that endeavors to build a tower, didn't count the cost to finish it, and after having laid the foundation abandons the project. As a result, everyone that looks at the half-finished tower mocks him for his ignorance. If you desire to make your marriage the best that it can be and you believe God to be bigger than what you are facing, be prepared for what is about to happen! Here is the cost factor that you must be aware of: Satan and all of his demons do not want to see someone standing in the gap for their spouse. It reminds him of Jesus standing in the gap for all of humanity. When you set your face (it should be like flint!) to bring restoration to your marriage, all the forces of hell will come against you to stop you in your tracks. But, if you have already believed that God is bigger, does it matter what comes against you?

Romans 8:31b "If God be for us, who can be against us?"

What is about to be said and shared will be very hard to read and not be taken as an offense. Please, remember, this is said out of complete love.

If you look at any part of our culture, you can see the waves of fads that come and go. A few years ago the world was introduced to 'WWJD' with little to no change to people's lives. I'm sure if you were to look back in pictures you would absolutely mortified by the clothes you CHOSE to wear 10, 15, 20 years ago. We can really see fads in the area of dieting. (This is not going to turn into a weight loss session!) In the world of dieting, we have The Hollywood diet, Atkins, HCG, Slimfast, Weight Watchers, Total Body Makeover, Jenny Craig, Biggest Loser....the list goes on and on and on. All of these have had their 15 minutes of fame. They come and go but most of them fail to change the real problem- you must have the desire to find and change your reasons for being fat and then, and only then, will you find the ability to make the changes that will change your life. Standing for your marriage CANNOT be a fad diet! You cannot one day wake up and say, "I am going to stand for my marital restoration!" Reason why? Because tomorrow will come and your spouse will do something stupid and you will say, "This is sooooooo not worth it! I'm done!" Standing for your marriage is you going all in with God and holding fast until the storm ends! We guarantee that before your marriage begins to glorify God it will get as ugly as hell! The only way that you can lose your marriage is if you stop standing!

Now, here is the rest of the "Milk and Pancakes" story. This is ugly and I (Josh) am very ashamed.

The day after Serena served me and showed Jesus' love to me, I turned on her like a rabid dog. I was used by the devil to tear her down. You see, I didn't recognize the love of Jesus through Serena until after I had returned from my prodigal lifestyle. I was trying to push her and God as far from me as possible. And since I couldn't push God; I pushed Serena. I told her things the day after for no other purpose than to let her know that I was done with her. The very day after her kindness was the first day that I asked her for the information about our legal insurance that we carried to see if they could help with divorce papers. That day was also the day that I made it known that I was deeper into pornography because I asked Serena for the security codes to unlock my computer. I now recognize that I had to push harder against the love shown to me in order for me to continue on the path I was choosing.

Everything that we talked about today are things that you must account for. You will not hear us tell you how to stand for your marriage because every marriage is different and God is not one to be locked down into a set of rules for restoration. But, you will hear us tell you the condition of your heart and your attitude in order to best facilitate a restored marriage.

Just so you know, this was very hard for us to write. On one hand, we want to encourage you to fight for your marriage with all that you have. On the other, we need for you to know that this will be no walk in the park. This will be the fight of your life but will be absolutely worth it! You are worth it! Your spouse is worth it!! Your marriage is worth it!!!

With a prayerful heart,

Josh and Serena

Children and Standing

Never stop standing! Josh would often say that I should not give the kids hope that he would come home.  He did not want our children to have ANY hope that he would come home. That is normal for the prodigal spouse who is gone. The prayers of our children are VERY powerful.  Why would HE want to encourage something that could potentially damage his plans?

Am I saying that you should make your spouse look bad in front of your children? ABSOLUTELY not!  You are there to protect your spouse, regardless of what they have done, regardless of them being gone.

You need to live, walk and act like a Christian spouse who believes in the power of prayer and in the mighty power of your Lord God. You need to teach your children about prayer and how to pray for problems in their daily life.

Your spouse does not want your child to become confused. He does not want to give them any hope or encouragement that they are coming home.

I often told my children Bible stories about impossible situations in the Old Testament. Then I would say, "That is why I believe that God can bring Daddy home." We just have to trust, wait and believe that God is in control. Nothing is too hard for our Lord God to do." When they would became discouraged about how long it was taking I would just have to refer to waiting on the promises of God.  We never know when the Holy Spirit is working behind the scenes. When we have joined ourselves together with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit......we have three other fighters.....the BEST I know!!!  So, when we got tired I reminded them that we had a LOT of other fighters, too!

Seek your Lord how to respond to your children according to their age. We must teach our children between right and wrong and making bad choices so that they will know the difference. My children just knew that Daddy was "running from God!"   In years to come I am sure they will learn more and more as it becomes a part of our testimony and ministry.  Do not tell your children things inappropriate for their age. They are hurting enough as it is.  Saying something like, "Daddy loves someone else more....."  that will only hurt them and make them question their father's love for them.  If you believe God can handle the impossible situation, then it must carry over into what you speak to your children.  This is NOT about taking sides.  Your children do not need to have more than they can handle.  When your spouse comes home it will be hard enough to bridge the gap of time, don't add more.

As the Lord leads, I am hoping to have more and more posts that will address these practical issues with children, dailiy life, etc. Pray the Lord grants me wisdom and the words to express His heart.  These are definitely a personal conviction, but I pray my heart comes across, not in a condeming way.  This is not an easy road to travel, but it CAN be done. I believe it also pleases the heart of God.
I would never stop standing or praying for my spouse who needs to be home to be the spouse and parent that God intended them to be.

May you consult the answers with an open Bible and an open heart, thus allowing God's Holy Spirit to help you find the truth.

Calling Out to All Prodigals

I pray that today's post may shed some light on the darkness you may be facing. Whether you are the stander, may this show you how to pray for your loved one. If you are the prodigal, may you hear from someone that knows what you are going through. I'm not really sure where to start with this so I will just let it flow....

******************************************************************

I am a stander. But not due to the greatness of my own spirit or convictions. I stand because I was shown how to stand by my wife. In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, my wife set her face towards God and chose to believe His Word about God, about marriage, and about me. I have since come to the same truths about God and about marriage. And more importantly, I have come to know the truth about me.

Although I am now a stander, I was a prodigal first. I guess you could call me a reformed prodigal. Or better yet...a redeemed prodigal. Yes, I am a redeemed prodigal. I am glad that I have been redeemed but many days I feel so ashamed about the past that I created. I am unworthy of the life that I now am free to live.

You see, I had all the opportunities that everyone has to be the person that I was designed to be. I also had all the opportunities to be the person that it was easier to be. And that is the person I chose to be. I didn't make the time to know God. I didn't find the time to learn who He made me to be. I didn't care about what I was giving up; I wanted to be the one in control. It was easier to be influenced by the allure of the world and its value system than to stand for righteousness and truth.

But, easy never allows for growth. Easy never causes one to rise up, to overcome, to see what waits for those that will ascend the hill of God. Easy only leads one to begin to desire the slop of the pigs. Easy paves the way that will draw you down to places you could never have imagined in your wildest nightmares. Easy makes sure that there are no bumps in the road to deter you from your destruction.

To the prodigals that may be reading this...please, hear the truth from someone that has been down that smooth, easy path. The road you are on will not bring you what you think you are missing out on. The choices you have made will not bring joy, or freedom, or the life you think you were made to live. You will wind up broken, alone, and longing for things to just go back to the way they were.

Prodigal child, running son, hiding daughter, please, please, listen to me. If you haven't yet, you will find yourself longing for things to go back to the way that they used to be. Your mind will wander thinking about what if I stayed. You left the life, marriage, and the family you had for what might have been with someone or something else. And now, what you had hoped would bring satisfaction has now left you empty and alone. I was there...I know the emptiness. I know the feeling that all is lost.

BUT IT'S NOT OVER!!

There is still hope. What was lost can be restored. Not only restored but redeemed. Everything that was lost can be bought back. Not only can it be bought back but it has been purchased. There is a man, Jesus, that took a cross to pay for all of your sin and my sin. He made it possible for all to be redeemed. All of your bad choices, all of your running, all of your infidelity, all of your unnatural desires....He paid for all of them so that you could be free from them.

Prodigal, you are not too far gone. You have not strayed so far that His love cannot reach you. You have done nothing that He cannot and will not and has not already forgiven you. You are redeemed; all you have to do is ask.

If you are reading this and need someone to simply hear you and your heart, email us. If you need someone to cry with, we are here for you. If you need someone to show you to this man, Jesus, we would love to help you with that. If no one else with fight with you to get back to the place where you know you are supposed to be, we will. We love you!!

Still standing as a redeemed prodigal,
Josh

How Long Do I Stand?

Forever! Yes, I know....but, I only waited for 3 months......could I have continued? If we surround ourselves with those that will encourage us when we are down, then I believe we can continue doing something forever."  This does NOT mean we won't get tired......

Don't let the number of years stop you praying and waiting for the miracle of your marriage being restored.

"We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end,
in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy,
but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what
has been promised.  When God made his promise to Abraham, since
there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,
saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants."
And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was
  promised."  Hebrews 6:11-15

Seek the Lord for His answer to your questions. Then your Lord speaks to your heart. Then obey His commands. God's ways are not our ways.

"For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay." Habakkuk 2:3

What is the meaning of "patience?"   In the Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary, it is a noun, described, "Patience grows only in trials, under chastisement, under undeserved affliction, in fruit bearing, in running the appointed race.  Patience perfects Christian character. Believers who become patient are strengthened with  all power through His Spirit in the inward man."

In the New World Dictionary, patient is defined as, "Bearing or enduring pain, trouble, etc. without complaining or losing self-control; refusing to be provoked or angered, as by an insult, forbearing; tolerant; calmly tolerating delay confusion; able to wait calmly for something desired; steady, diligent; persevering."

As we read throughout the Bible, we can see how people had to wait patiently for their miracles, their visions, and their promises.  Waiting patiently is developing your Christian character and you are being an example to others while you wait.  May you and I wait, always praising the Lord and not grumbling, trusting and persevering, never giving up or quitting.  We will reap what we sow so be patient waiting for your promise!
Has your marriage fallen apart? Has your spouse found someone else? Do you feel like you are not number 1?  You have cried out to the Lord and He says He will restore and rebuild your marriage, giving you promises, but be patient.  Let's not be like the Israelites who grumbled and complained and made God angry. It's worth waiting for His timing, so do not grow weary in well-doing.

Standing for Marriage

A Daily Stance

We talk a lot about standing for your marriage. When you hear that someone is standing for their marriage, your mind immediately defaults to their marriage is failing. Not always true. Actually, standing for your marriage is an everyday practice as it is for extreme circumstances.

In Ephesians 6, it says numerous times to stand. Verse 11, "Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand against all the strategies of the devil." Verse 13, "...after the battle you will still be standing firm." Verse 14, "Stand your ground..." with all the pieces of God's armor.

Do we stand only when the bottom has seemed to fall out? Do we choose to stand after the devil has run rampant through our marriage? Do we only stand after the attack happens? I am telling you now...if you wait to stand until after the onslaught happens, your path to a victorious, healthy marriage will be a harder fight. You will have victory but the work needed to establish that strong, marital defense will be a harder fight. It's easier to keep the devil out than it is to make him leave!

Within the military, there are people whose sole job is to make battle plans for situations that may arise someday. They may never have to use those plans but they have made their stand. They know that within a few moments they will be able to execute their plans for the contingency. They have learned the value of a forceful stance.

So often our reactions to adverse situations in our marriages is one of frustration, depression, denial, and a general escalation of emotions. We cannot think with a clear mind and, therefore, we react to the person standing in front if us instead of a forceful response to the spirit that is motivating that individual. Instead of reacting to the individual, we should be responding with plans that we laid out in times of peace. When the devil rears his head within our marriage let him be met with a forceful and powerful stand. Heels dug in, shields up, swords drawn, and faces set like flint ready to engage the devil. Don't let him catch you with your hands down and not ready. We know that he will attack; we just don't know when it will happen.

We should be proactive in the good times. Let us make our contingency plans in times of peace. Always standing firm and always on guard. We do not decide to make a stand after the battle has begun; we decide to stand when life is peaceable.

What does all of this mean for you and I?

It means to begin overlooking some of your pet peeves that are nothing more than your personal preferences. It means to quit freaking out when he leaves the toilet seat up. It means to stop worrying and causing grief when she is running late because she can't find anything to wear. Stop constantly nagging him about chores you would like to see done around the house. Quit speaking down to her like she is someone beneath you. It means start bringing flowers home, guys. It means start having yourself put together when he comes home from work. It means putting the kids to bed early, shutting off the TV, and just hanging out together.

Men, it means to start dating your wife again. Flirt with her like an adolescent schoolboy. Start crushing on her again. Send her love notes written in the steam on the bathroom mirror. It means reading the Word of God to her and over her. Lead her in the things of God. Bring her home treats that she likes. Call her sometime for no good reason but to hear her voice. Listen to her...no, seriously....actually listen to her and what she is saying when she is telling you about the boring, mundane stuff about her day. (That one thing alone will work wonders, bro!)

Ladies, it means give him something to chase. Let him be your hero...again. Make a big deal about him killing spiders. Become like a teenage girl when he shows off for you. Become his biggest cheerleader. When he thinks you don't know he is listening, brag about him and how strong he is. Trust and believe that he will do what he said he will do. Follow him even if you know better...and don't tell, "I told you so" when it blows up in his face. Instead, encourage him and support him in the face of failure. (If you believe in him wholeheartedly and he knows this, he will challenge the very gates of hell for you, girl!)

The point of all this is this...MAKE YOUR STAND DAILY!! If you keep the devil out today, you won't have to drive him out tomorrow. It's the marriage that God entrusted you with. Protect it, keep it, honor it, STAND FOR IT!!

Standing with you,

Josh

P.S. And, men...pick up your dirty shorts!

Basics

When I was trying to find a good graphic for the blog it was hard finding something that would "work."  As I needed to find something to write about today I realized how perfect that picture is.....to stand for your marriage is often a very lonely road--but it is also a joyful thing to know we are in God's perfect will.  That picture shows a lot of peace to me...a rainbow....believing in the promises of God that stand true through the test of time.  The rainbow is hope that God keeps His promises.  We can stand firm........

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.  Do everything in love.

Do you know the enemy you are fighting? The key in fighting any battle begins with understanding your enemy. To be on your guard you have to know the enemy. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 6:12 Satan is your enemy. Your spouse has been taken captive by Satan to do his evil will. Satan is defeated by the blood of Jesus Christ. This does NOT mean that I believe your spouse had no choice; they had a choice, and they are allowing Satan access into their lives--most often seen evident in the lies and things they speak. Your defense against Satan is praying the Word of God over your marriage.

Having faith...."Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Hebrews 11:1,6

Faith is based on two beliefs; first that God is who He says He is, and second that God will do what He says He will do. When you believe that God will fulfill His promises, even when you do not see a physical manifestation of these promises, you are operating in faith. "

"Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, "Go, throw yourself into the sea," and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.'" Matthew 21:21-22

Prayer is the physical demonstration of our faith that God exists, that He hears our prayers and that He will deliver on His promises. Faith means resting in what Christ has done for us in the past, but also means trusting Him for what He will do for us in the future.

COURAGE---it takes courage to stand for a broken marriage. The world bombards us with quick solutions and admonitions to "get on with your life." It takes real guts to be obedient to God by standing for your marriage vows. God is on your side. He will never leave you. Be strengthened in your faith, knowing that Jesus is with you every step of the way through the trial of separation or divorce.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Deuteronomy 31:6

I pray that you may find encouragement in knowing that you have back-up; God is waging war against Satan and his minions for the salvation of your home and family.

Staying strong.....an important part of standing for the healing of your marriage is realizing that you are powerless to change your spouse. Only God can change a hardened heart. Your strength is not in your own efforts but through humbly submitting your life and family to God's loving care.

"It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect." 2 Samuel 22:33

" For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:10

"I can do everything through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

Everything in love.....hands down, the hardest part of standing for the healing of your marriage is giving up the right to be angry and bitter towards the spouse that has left you or even the spouse who is with you but making your life miserable. God commands us to do everything in love. Everything? Always? Who can live up to such a demand?

Most likely easy to understand is the fact that many people use anger and guilt to manipulate their spouses into feeling the pain that they are feeling. If you have been guilty of acting in unloving ways towards your mate, repent and ask God to give you a heart that can love even when it hurts. Your role as wife/husband has not changed just because of the outward circumstances. You are called to love/respect your spouse regardless of what is happening around you. Your calling is still your calling until death, remember? (and, no, you aren't allowed to kill them to speed that up)

Christ is our model of perfect love. Can you love your spouse with the love of Christ? Are you willing to die for them? You can love your spouse in this way because Christ first loved you. Oh, you might have to remind yourself a time or two or three or four or okay, a hundred...but it CAN be done.

"All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." 2 Corinthians 4:15-17

We have to learn to love without counting the cost. God will bless you.

"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments." Deuteronomy 7:9

When you have an exhausting day think of the generations that will be affected.....the reward is so much greater than the trial you are enduring.
